House On FireAs we turn our focus to the upcoming National Fire Prevention Week (October 9th to 15th), here is a little history on why we have set this time aside.

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.

The common myth is that Mrs. O'Leary's cow started the fire in a barn. The fire did most certainly start near that barn but there is no proof that the cow was to blame. There have been many theories, including kids smoking, the neighbor getting back at the O'Learys or fiery meteorites. Several fires were started that day in Michigan and Wisconsin as well. There is no final cause determined but it was a devastating fire.

The tragic blaze eventually let to National Fire Prevention Day, first proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1920. It also helped to establish National Fire Prevention Week, which is the longest running public health and safety observance on record

Please take advantage of the Fire Department Open Houses that will take place over the month of October to see how well your department is set up to respond to your needs. And Don't Wait – Check the Date! Be sure to replace your smoke alarms every 10 years!
