Painting WallsIt's said you should dream in full color—and this year's hues are the stuff dreams are made of. Here, we break down the top three color trends for interiors to help you update your home with style.

Colors of the Year

The Pantone Color Institute recently released its expertly researched Spring 2016 color report. In a surprise announcement, the title of "Color of the Year" was given to a pair of shades, Rose Quartz and Serenity, a pale pink and a soothing blue. Make no mistake: These aren't the saccharine sweet shades of nurseries and playrooms. Petal-soft Rose Quartz is surprisingly modern; pair it with dark leather or raw wood for an unexpected elegance. And breezy Serenity can bring optimism and tranquility to any room of the house. Refresh your kitchen's beige paint or your bedroom's sage bedding, and feel the difference Serenity can make.

Pantone's other "It" colors include a punchy Peach Echo, a sunny Buttercup yellow and a beachy Snorkel Blue. The modern play on primary colors lends itself to simple seasonal updates, like accent pillows, textured throws and ceramic vases.

Neutral Palettes

Another surprise? Benjamin Moore named its 2016 color Simply White. Following suit is Sherwin-Williams' Alabaster, a soothing off-white, and Glidden's Cappuccino White, a rich ivory. These trend forecasters are suggesting dreamy, creamy palettes as the perfect backdrop for decorative accents like high-contrast trim, gallery-style art installations and jewel-toned window treatments. Consider repainting your living space in the white tone of your choosing, then have fun with splashes of texture, metallics and colors on your clean, blank canvas. Fresh white walls? Color us delighted.

Two-Tone Everything

Mixed metals in the powder room. Mix-and-match cabinetry in the kitchen. Painted nightstands with raw-wood bureaus in the bedroom. From Pinterest to retailers like West Elm and One Kings Lane, say goodbye to matchy-matchy furniture sets and hello to unique combinations of finishes, textures and shapes. If new furniture is in your budget, consider replacing your uniform kitchen chairs with an eclectic collection of vintage wood stools in similar sizes, or investing in a reclaimed oak coffee table to offset your polished mahogany bookcases. Update your lighting by mixing copper and brass hanging pendants in the dining room. Or play with mixed metals by hanging a trio of mismatched statement mirrors together on one wall. This approach to décor will give your home character and authenticity.
