Every time a giant storm hits a residential area and causes flooding, homeowners are shocked by the devastation. When damage has been done to a home and the owners start to look into the cost of repairs, it can quickly become evident that the average homeowner does not really understand how insurance works and what is covered by their policy.

In the wake of flooding, insurance agents do a lot of work trying to help their clients understand the kind of coverage they have, along with the kind of coverage that could best protect them against similar storms in the future.

One difficult distinction when it comes to flood insurance is the difference between flood damage and damage caused by sewer backup. Some pipes handle both sewer and storm drainage, and so a large storm can cause problems.

According to the USA Today article, "Hard Lessons About Flood Insurance Policies" by Susan Tompor:

"Many people don't realize they need to buy an endorsement or they don't ask whether their standard policy offers the coverage. Sewer backup coverage might add $40 to $50 to an annual premium, according to the Insurance Information Institute."

Sewer backup coverage is an affordable addition to flood insurance coverage, if you want to be sure you will be protected in the wake of the next big storm it's a good idea to ask about sewer backup coverage as well. Sewer backup coverage covers damage done to your home when sewage backs up into the drains in your home.  This can happen from storms that overwhelm sewer lines, from tree roots that grow into sewer lines and cause blockages or a blockage can occur in the city's sanitary main, which would cause a slow backup that can spill sewage into a home.  Sewer backups are not only costly, they are also toxic and hazardous. Ask your independent insurance agent if your flood insurance policy has a sewer backup rider.
