DIY House WorkAre your home insurance rates making you cringe? It's never fun to pay a premium, but it's worthwhile to have peace of mind and financial security when life takes an unexpected turn.

There are some DIY projects that you can do to keep your premiums lower. Want to make your home safer and more up to date — all while saving on your insurance? It is possible with these five DIY projects!

1. Install New Locks

Prevent break in's with new, stronger locks. Many locks today even come with key pads and extra security measures. These are usually quite affordable, and you can buy them at your hardware store. It only takes a few hours to install a lock. Deadbolt and security locks alone can save you on your premiums.

Also remember that you should always change the locks when you move into a new home.

2. Invest in a Security System

It's nice to have your home monitored day and night. Security systems often provide video footage to look back on if something happens.

These can get pricey, but it's possible to get affordable monitoring services if you shop around a bit. It's a small amount to pay for the peace of mind you receive. This is another savings on your premiums!

3. Replace Insulation in Your Air Conditioner

Proper insulation is essential to making your air conditioner more energy efficient. It saves you money and is less of a fire hazard.

This project is a bit more intensive and has a slight learning curve. Once you learn how to do it, you'll be able to repeat the process in any future homes you own.

Also consider lowering the temperature on you water heater. Doing so can save you on your energy bills. It also lessens the chance that a water heater will overheat and cause a fire.

4. Trim Hedges and Optimize Landscaping

Excess shrubbery too close to your home or electric lines is an accident waiting to happen. Look on home and garden websites to find ideas on how to create an attractive yard that doesn't pose a fire hazard. Always cut dead trees and shrubs away from the home. This will ensure that it is both safe and pleasing to the eye.

5. Replace Pool Cover and Fencing

For those with outdoor pools, this is essential. Far too many children drown each year because pools are not secured! Decrease the chance that such an accident occurs at your home with this DIY project. Check to make sure you cover is in good condition and fits securely. Then, modify your fence with locks so that children can't get in by themselves. Your Insurance Company may have restrictions on what your pool can and cannot have; such as diving boards and/or slides. Always check to make sure you have the proper coverage.

Before starting any repairs you plan to make, contact your home insurance company. This will ensure your projects follow the standards that your insurer uses to evaluate repairs. Plus it will save you time and money in the long run.
